  • Essay in English: My first language was not English. I interacted with everyone in Urdu, the native language of my parent’s hometown, for the first 5 years of my life. Yet as I grew older, I felt my proficiency in my native tongue slipping away from me as I learned English in school. While elements of my cultural practice remain with me to this day, I now stumble through phrases that native Urdu speakers convey with no difficulty. Yet my desire to rekindle my ability to speak my first language did not arise until I began to learn Korean. I learned about how Korean sentences are structured and remembered the new rules more effectively since in Urdu, the structure is the same. Elements of Korean culture and Pakistani culture stood out to me as being similar. I love learning Korean, because of how smoothly I picked it up and strangely, 15 years later, I find myself practicing Urdu again. Since my goal is to become a doctor, learning a totally new language has shown me how speaking a different language means that you can actually see the world in a totally different way. For example, Korean may have a word to describe the way pain is felt that is not conveyed the same way in English. As a doctor, it is my responsibility to understand things from everyone’s viewpoint, and learning a new language propels me toward that. Now, I am inspired to learn more languages – I am actually starting to learn Mandarin so that I can speak comfortably to as many people in the future as possible. I think carrying your own culture forward while also being familiar with others is such a valuable asset – you carry entirely different but completely accurate perspectives of the world around with you, an experience that not everyone can say they have had during their life.
