  • Essay in English: 'Te espero.' In Spanish, waiting and hoping are the same word. By accident, you are taught these concepts are inextricably linked. Language learning fundamentally challenges one's conception of what one knows and how one knows it. This knowledge is indispensable. Learning Spanish, for example, I have witnessed how expressing hopes or desires receives its own verbal treatment, and how there are degrees to 'love.' I am a Spanish major currently enrolled in the Masters program in Translation and Interpretation and have spent so much time with the language. Currently, I am on a study abroad program in Spain. A few days ago, I was discussing 'te quiero' versus 'te amo' with a group of Spanish students. The value of the conversation hit me then, coffee and sandwich in hand: I am in the world. There is so much I do not know. I'd like to try and know it.
  • Essay in Spanish: Te espero.
